The National Academies Roundtable on Quality Care for People with Serious Illness will host a public 3-part webinar series, “Changing Public Perceptions to Build Awareness, Knowledge, and Uptake of Palliative Care: An Evidence-based Approach,” in May and June 2024 to explore the use of evidence-based strategies to improve public outreach about palliative care.
The first webinar in the series will discuss public perceptions of palliative care. Evidence shows that earlier access to palliative care improves patient and family outcomes, yet misperceptions serve as barriers to access to palliative care earlier in the course of serious illness. Research reveals that once palliative care is introduced in a way that matches people’s aspirations and needs, they are more likely to choose palliative care.
