Compass HQIC project included a total of 278 hospitals in six states, South Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa, Kansas, Mississippi and Alabama. South Dakota and Minnesota facilities were represented with 43 hospitals in South Dakota and four hospitals in Minnesota. Of the 278 hospitals, 79% were critical access, 20% rural IPPS and 1% rural emergency.
The goal of the program was to:
- Decrease opioid-related adverse events; improve access to care and behavioral health outcomes
- Increase patient safety; reduce all cause harm in hospitals and community-based facilities
- Improve community-based care transitions to reduce hospital admissions
We are pleased to announce that the Compass HQIC exceeded all goals set by CMS. Below is the list of measures and the percent of improvement that was achieved over the course of the four years and the program impact:

During Compass HQIC’s recent hospital celebration meeting held on 9/10/24, the Compass HQIC congratulated participating hospitals for their effort and accomplishments. A special recognition took place to recognize the members that participated in the Rural Hospital Advisory Panel (RHAP), a group of quality leaders from across the participating states that provided feedback and guidance to the Compass HQIC. In addition, Kalleen Wasson, RN from St. Michael’s Hospital Avera presented and shared her knowledge on how their hospital was able to maintain zero cases of central-line associated bloodstream infections (CLABSI) over the four years of the program.
