Universal Blood Lead Testing and Reporting

The South Dakota Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Program has adopted universal blood lead testing for all children at 12 and 24 months of age effective January 1, 2025. This new guideline aims to enhance the early detection of lead, minimize the harmful impacts of lead, and inform prevention efforts across the state.

The South Dakota Department of Health (SD-DOH) would also like to remind medical providers, health care facilities, laboratories, and other institutions of the requirement to report to SD-DOH all blood lead test results whether negative or positive.
