Trustee Guide: Quality tools for hospital boards

Conference room with a big polished table and arm-chairs

Recognizing the critical role trustees play and that quality is the top priority for health care facilities, the American Hospital Association (AHA) has updated and enhanced the Eliminating Harm, Improving Patient Care: A Trustee Guide. The guide is designed to provide continuing education and guidance to hospital and health system trustees in the journey to improve patient care.

This valuable resource includes four new video modules, a discussion guide and a self-assessment tool. The video modules feature hospital and health system leaders, sharing the work and strategic priorities around quality at their organizations. Topics include ongoing board education, how boards can influence quality through a focus on population health, clinical engagement and quality improvement, and the importance of patient and family engagement to improve quality. Each module has three components: Preview questions, an educational video and key takeaways.

In addition, the South Dakota Association of Healthcare Organizations (SDAHO) also offers trustee and CEO resources through the Trustees Resource Center found at trustees.sdaho.org. Education, advocacy and certification are key areas of information.

As a component of trustee education, SDAHO has scheduled Karma Bass, an expert on governance, strategic planning and board effectiveness, to present a trustee boot camp scheduled for the opening day of the annual SDAHO convention. Ms. Bass will extract information from boot camp attendees and incorporate those topics into various general session tracks open to all attendees.
