Event Type 2: Long-Term Care

Overview: 

This session will provide an overview of workplace safety perspectives in home health care, focusing on the risks of physical assault and non-physical aggression. Participants will learn about the challenges unique to providing services in a home environment and the importance of reporting incidents of violence. The session will also highlight strategies for better preparing staff to handle violent behaviors and the role of leadership in developing a safety culture.

Objectives:

1. Explore the Prevalence of Risk: Review the prevalence of physical assault or non-physical aggression that contributes to workplace violence in home care settings.
2. Discuss Protection Strategies: Discuss strategies that home care staff and employers can use to protect themselves from workplace violence.
3. Understand Management’s Role: Understand the role of management in improving reporting rates and supporting staff facing challenging situations.

Lisa Terry, CHPA, CPP has significant experience leading healthcare security, police, safety and emergency management programs. Lisa currently serves as Principal Consultant at Secure Workplace Solutions, LLC.  Prior to that she served as Chief Development Officer for Vistelar Conflict Management and Vice President, Healthcare for Allied Universal®.

Lisa has served as the Chief of Campus Police and Public Safety with WakeMed Health and Hospitals in Raleigh, North Carolina, Chief of Police and Public Safety with Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, Virginia and Director of Hospital Police and Transportation at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill.

As 2024 Chair of the ASIS Healthcare Community Steering Committee and as a former board president and guidelines council member of IAHSS, Lisa has been fortunate to collaborate with some of the country’s greatest minds in healthcare, security, and policing. She shares her knowledge, strategies, and lessons learned for successfully preventing and mitigating violence in her books: “Preventing Violence in the Emergency Department” and “The Active Shooter Response Toolkit for Healthcare Workers.”

Overview: 

This class will provide learners with knowledge of the concept of motivational interviewing and how it can be utilized in fall prevention.  Self-management support techniques will be discussed as a means to provide individuals at risk for falls with the knowledge and tools needed to proactively reduce the incidence of falling.

Objectives:

1. Understand the four principles of Motivational Interviewing (MI)
2. Describe the relationship between patient engagement and self-management support
3. Describe OARS in MI
4. Eliciting change talk through MI
5. Strategies for self-management support in fall prevention
