Purpose: Deep venous thrombosis (DVT) and terminal ulcers are clinical conditions encountered in hospice care but are often misdiagnosed and mistreated. Using a case presentation, this webinar will review the recommendations on diagnosis and treatment of these conditions. Questions frequently asked will be answered in the webinar, such as: Do we need to continue DVT prophylaxis after hospitalization for patient at high risk of occurrence? Do we need to continue anticoagulation after DVT treatment to prevent recurrence? What are the types of terminal skin ulcers? How do we recognize these skin findings and provide timely intervention?
Objectives:
- Review the guidelines on deep venous thrombosis prophylaxis and treatment
- Discuss how to recognize a Kennedy Terminal Ulcer
- Discuss the implications of a Kennedy Terminal Ulcer and how to prepare the patient and family for imminent death
