  2. Discuss barriers to adequate pain management in older adults
  3. Recommend specific assessment tools for pain and modifications of pain assessment in cognitively impaired patients
  4. Analyze the role of opioid and non-opioid medications for the management of pain in the older adult.

Presenters:

Anna Meyer, Clinical Pharmacy Supervisor, Avera Long-Term Care Pharmacy

Anna Meyer, PharmD is the Clinical Pharmacy Supervisor for the Avera Long-Term Care Pharmacy and has been a consultant pharmacist for over 5 years.  In her role she is responsible for developing clinical and educational initiatives designed to optimize drug therapy in the elderly in both the nursing home and assisted living settings.  Anna is an active member of the Statewide Antibiotic Stewardship Collaborative in South Dakota and Minnesota and also serves as a preceptor with the South Dakota State University (SDSU) College of Pharmacy and as adjunct associate professor in the Department of Pharmacy Practice in the College of Pharmacy and Allied Health Professions.

Megan Arend, RN, Program Development Representative, Avera Long-Term Care Pharmacy

Megan Arend is a nurse and the Program Development Representative for Avera Long-Term Care Pharmacy. She has been with the pharmacy for over seven years, primarily working with long term care facilities in South Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa and Nebraska. Megan provides education, customer service and support to the facilities the pharmacy services. She has a special focus on providing quality and service excellence to the facilities and her love for the geriatric population has made her successful within this line of work. Megan is a graduate of University of South Dakota and lives in Sioux Falls with her husband, Bob and their dog, Wally and cat, Marley.
