New price transparency requirements released by CMS

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has released additional information on new price transparency requirements that go into effect Jan. 1 for hospitals. The Affordable Care Act (ACA) and subsequent guidance from CMS in fiscal years 2015 and 2019 Inpatient Prospective Payment System (IPPS) rules require every hospital publish on an annual basis a list of standard charges for all items and services provided. The most recently released information states IPPS hospitals are now required to make available charges for diagnosis-related groups (DRG).

The South Dakota Association of Healthcare Organizations (SDAHO) has updated a brief for SDAHO members to help explain the rule’s requirements and how to communicate with patients and media about the chargemaster and related price transparency issues. SDAHO will alert members when additional information becomes available.
