Changes in COVID-19 Daily Data Reporting Process

The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) last week announced significant changes to the daily COVID-19 data reporting process. The most significant changes included the removal of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN) COVID-19 module for daily data reporting. This change does not impact reporting of COVID-19 nursing home data submissions in to NHSN or the use of NHSN as the healthcare-associated infection tracking system for hospitals.
The hospital daily COVID-19 reporting options include (1 TeleTracking  and (2 HHS Protect.  It is critical that you report the information requested on a consistent, daily basis. While there are some data elements that will be used for the distribution of remdesivir, other fields will be used for the distribution of other important items such as Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). As a result, HHS ask that reporting of all data elements included in the Guidance for Hospital Reporting occurs on daily basis. HHS Protect data released early this week, creates a central repository for this data, allowing more collaboration, flexibility, and access for all federal personnel responding to the pandemic.  HHS created a transition plan, which is available here.
