Hometown Healthcare Heroes: Sanford Canton-Inwood Medical Center

Congratulations to this month’s SDAHO Hometown Healthcare Heroes recipients, Sanford Canton-Inwood Medical Center located in Canton, South Dakota.

To help member facilities with workforce needs, SDAHO has launched the Hometown Healthcare Heroes campaign. This storytelling campaign is designed to recognize career opportunities at member facilities and celebrate the people that work there and the communities they live in.

Sanford Canton-Inwood Medical Center sits in Lincoln County located in the rolling hills of the Sioux Valley. There is an 11-bed critical access hospital and Hiawatha Heights, a 16-bed assisted living community. There is also a rural health clinic in both Canton and Beresford South Dakota, which is located a short drive south of the town. Leah Peterson, PT, is the team leader for the physical therapy and rehabilitation department. She was born and raised in Canton but left to attend college and start her healthcare career. She returned to her hometown over 30 years ago, when the hospital called looking for a physical therapist. “We came back to this community, and I love my practice. We have a dynamic fun outpatient practice, and we also work with our swing beds and our in-patients.” Leah Peterson, PT, Team Leader Physical Therapy Rehabilitation Department.

Leah says for years many people thought that quality healthcare only came from larger facilities and communities, but that is not the case. “People thought you had to go bigger to get better care but that’s not true. I can get the needs of my patients met right here. We don’t have to go bigger to get better. And if we cannot get the care our patients need locally, we can still get it in South Dakota.” Leah Peterson, PT, Team Leader Physical Therapy Rehabilitation Department.

Sanford Canton-Inwood Medical Center is like many rural healthcare facilities when it comes to the variety of experience healthcare professionals receive while on the job. Scott Larson, CEO of Sanford Canton-Inwood says “You can work in-patient, out-patient, cardiac rehab, respiratory therapy, stress test, and then you essentially have a golden ticket if you ever want to move outside of that facility or you can stay and come to love working in a rural facility where you get to do something different every day.” Scott Larson, CEO, Sanford Canton-Inwood Medical Center.

Canton is located a short drive from Sioux Falls, South Dakota’s largest community. For those who enjoy small town living, Canton has all the amenities to allow residents to shop, dine and entertain themselves without leaving this town of three thousand. Russ Townsend, the Superintendent of the Canton School District says, “Our school is a nice size school because students can be involved in anything they want to be involved in and our kids do. It’s not uncommon to see a state wrestling champion also on the stage during the spring musical” Russ Townsend, Superintendent, Canton South Dakota School District.

Career opportunities within Sanford Canton-Inwood Medical Center include Nursing, Lab Technicians, EMS positions, Radiology, Dietary Staff, Speech Therapists. For those who quality, there are sign-on bonuses and a loan forgiveness program. Employees who work extra shifts also receive incentives!
