President-elect Donald Trump has nominated Georgia U.S. Rep. Tom Price to serve as secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and Seema Verma to serve as administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).
Price, an orthopedic surgeon, has been a vocal critic of the Affordable Care Act and has proposed his own replacement plan, the Empowering Patients First Act, which called for individual health pools, expanded health savings accounts, tax credits to buy coverage and lawsuit abuse reforms.
Verma, a health policy consultant, crafted Indiana Gov. Mike Pence’s signature health-care plan, a Medicaid program that requires monthly contributions to health savings accounts. Pence is now vice president-elect.
Both appointments require approval from the U.S. Senate.
