Bill authorizing 50-bed nursing home in Eagle Butte advances

The House Health and Human Services Committee on Tuesday advanced a bill authorizing the operation of a nursing home facility in Eagle Butte. The bill previously passed the Senate.

The state Legislature initially approved the nursing home on the Cheyenne River Indian Reservation in 2003, but that bill’s approval ran out because the legislation contained a sunset clause.

Medicine Wheel Village is already operating an assisted living center. Senate Bill 57 would allow the center to open a 50-bed nursing home at the location.

Administrator Kim Clown said the nearest nursing home is 90 miles away in any direction, and the opening will allow tribal members who need the services to remain on the reservation.

Senate Bill 57 contains an emergency clause, which allows it to immediately take effect upon signing but requires a 2/3 vote from both chambers for passage.
