Overview:

The IPC Seminar has evolved over 20 years to educate interdisciplinary students on primary palliative care. It recently was adapted to overcome the geographical barriers in our state while still positively influencing the student’s ability for collaborative practice and comfort with spirituality.

Objectives:

  • Participants will describe how an interdisciplinary palliative care seminar:
  • used diverse pedagogy to overcome geographical barriers.
  • impacted students’ perceptions of collaborative practice.
  • affected students’ comfort level with spirituality.

Presenters:

Amanda Sedlacek, DO is a board-certified internal medicine and hospice & palliative care physician at the Yankton Medical Clinic in Yankton South Dakota. She received her medical degree from the Des Moines University of Osteopathic Medicine and her undergraduate degree from the University of South Dakota, Vermillion. Her internal medicine residency was completed at St. Joseph Warren Hospital in Waren, Ohio and her Palliative & Hospice Medicine fellowship was completed at Summa Health System, Akron Ohio. She is an Associate Professor of Sandford School of Medicine and Instructs the Interdisciplinary Palliative Care Seminar hosted by the University of South Dakota’s Interprofessional Health Education Center.

Sarah Mollman is the Associate Dean for Research in the College of Nursing at South Dakota State University. Her past research includes exploring decision making in women with early-stage breast cancer and perceptions and knowledge of palliative care. She has also co-led a statewide network dedicated to improving awareness and knowledge of palliative care. Dr. Mollman is principal investigator on a study to adapt and test an early palliative care intervention for American Indian and rural patients with advanced cancer and their family caregivers. Sarah balances her professional life by spending time with her family (two and four-legged), gardening, and brewing kombucha.
