Earlier this year the South Dakota Association of Healthcare Organizations (SDAHO) launched Stepping into Governance, a 4-part video series focusing on board governance training. This month, SDAHO pushed out the first set of micro-learning videos from this series, which will give members bite size lessons.
This week, we are sharing clips from Session 2: Partnerships and Alliances. This video provides an overview of the many relationships that contribute to effectively running a healthcare organization. Outlined are the relationships, partnerships, understanding, and communication demanded of board members as they provide their leadership to their organizations. Board members have a fiduciary duty to understand types of affiliations and partnerships now common in healthcare across regions. Board members are the voice of their community and each member’s voice has power.
In this first video, Margaret explains that it is important to understand ones role while on a board and in the board room. A board member’s vote is just as powerful as any other member on that board.

Margaret reminds viewers that on any board, boundaries are important, they are positive and they are critical for ongoing success of the partnership, operation, organization, and governance structure of healthcare systems.
Being a new member of any governance board can come with lots of questions, and maybe even some confusion. Margaret shares some best practices in her video, including tips to ensure new board members are not alone.
